PROMISE FELLOW OF THE MONTH
June 2010

Best Promise Fellow Experience: Being an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow for two years there are a lot of experiences that I have taken from this adventure. I guess my best one would be the partnership that was developed between Evergreen Terrace Nursing home and the students. I took the students to Evergreen every Wednesday to play games with the residents. The students looked forward to going to Evergreen and the people that they made a connection with loved having them come. This was a win-win partnership.

Bio: My name is Loretta Hamm but everyone calls me Lori. I grew up in St. Paul, MN and graduated from Johnson High School. I worked at the Ax-man Surplus store for 13 years as a cashier in St. Paul, then a store manager in Fridley. I then was a store manager for Only Deals in Elk River for two years until my husband got a job at National Steel in Keewatin. My husband Dave grew up in Warba and always wanted to move back so we ended up on the farm he grew up on. I have been a stay at home mom for two daughters, Cassie and Ashley the last 10 years and did a lot of volunteering. I am still on the Warba/Feeley Recreation Board. I wrote grants and helped with getting the playground that is in Warba. I have volunteered a lot for my daughters school and love working with kids. With both my kids in school full-time I was looking for a job that would work around their schedules and that I could work with kids. Then  Dana Marrier told me to come to the school and ask Dave about a job and I did and I am happy to be working at Northern Lights Community School as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow. I love doing crafts and drawing. I used to love snowmobiling before kids and hope to get back into that now that my kids are big enough.  We also like to fourwheel thru the woods and enjoy nature. In the summer you can usually find me at the Legion Beach with my girls or camping.
