School-Community Partners

A fundamental belief of the Alliance is that schools alone cannot ensure that all students succeed. Youth development must be a community effort, and all sectors (nonprofit, government, schools, faith-based, business, parents, youth) must mobilize around young people.

School-Community Partnerships ensure young people have multiple access points to resources.

tutoring3[1]Each SCP reviews causes of the achievement gap and the civic engagement gap within their own school(s), designs strategies to address their particular issues (e.g. tutoring, mentoring, youth leadership development, future goal planning), and identifies youth to be targeted for program participation. For example, an SCP might focus on  a grade where transitions are difficult (e.g., eighth to ninth grade) or a particular group of youth, such as youth who are ineligible for Title I, youth with a history of academic failures in particular subjects or truancy, or youth identified by teachers as those with potential if they receive individualized attention.

SCPs host and support the work of AmeriCorps Promise Fellows who serve full-time for one year at a site. The Fellows coordinate programs and volunteers to increase the academic success of students  identified by the SCP Team as needing additional support. They leverage resources and build capacity of SCPs to utilize tutoring, mentoring, civic engagement, and leadership development with their students.
