School-Community Partners

A fundamental belief of the Alliance is that schools alone cannot ensure that all students succeed. We believe youth development must be a community effort, not just an effort of those in the education or youth development fields. All sectors (non-profit, government, schools, faith-based, business, parents, youth) must mobilize around young people. School-Community Partnerships (SCPs) ensure young people have multiple access points to resources.

tutoring3[1]Each SCP reviews causes of the achievement gap and the civic engagement gap within their own school(s), designs strategies to address their particular issues (e.g. tutoring, mentoring, youth leadership development, future goal planning), and identifies youth to be targeted for program participation. The cohort of youth might be a particular grade where transitions are difficult (e.g., 8th to 9th grade) or a particular group of youth, such as youth who are ineligible for Title I, youth with a history of academic failures in particular subjects or truancy, or youth identified by teachers as those with great potential if they only received individualized attention.

SCPs host and support the work of AmeriCorps Promise Fellows to help implement their plans. AmeriCorps Promise Fellows serve full-time for one year at an SCP site. AmeriCorps Promise Fellows coordinate programs and volunteers to increase the academic success of students locally identified by the SCP Team as needing additional support. Promise Fellows leverage resources and build capacity of SCPs to effectively utilize tutoring, mentoring, civic engagement, and leadership development for students.
