Kia Lor served as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow during the 2013-14 academic school year at Edgewood Middle School in Mounds View, MN. When Kia joined AmeriCorps, she was undecided about whether or not she wanted to be a traditional teacher in the K-12 system.  She enjoyed teaching and knew it was important for her to work with multicultural students.  Kia’s year of service helped her conclude that she was “not a built to be a traditional K-12 teacher – which was very useful information at the time.”

Kia went back to school to get her Master’s degree in Intercultural Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. She is now the Assistant Director of Language and Intercultural Learning at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where she works with multicultural and international students at the higher education level and provides opportunities for students to build on their intercultural competence development through study abroad, second language acquisition, and leadership programs.

Kia says that one valuable takeaway from her year of service was what a great and successful supervisor should be- which was modeled by her supervisor at Edgewood.  Kia says, “Now that I’m in a position where I supervise students, I am a better and stronger supervisor because of her.”
