Students on School Boards
In late October, the Minnesota Youth Council hosted a: Students on School Boards Town Hall Discussion, with great perspective from School Board members Jerald (Paynesville Area School District), Laura (Alexandria Public School District), Staci (Lakes County Service Cooperative and Pelican Rapids School District), and Ankita (Wayzata School District), Kyle and Averie from Vote16USA, Sam from League of Women Voters Minnesota, and MN State Representative Amanda Hemmingsen (District 47A), and MYC Representatives Braden, Shyamana, and Daniel.
The meeting focused on student representation and engagement in school boards, with panelists discussing the benefits and challenges of having student voices in decision-making processes. Participants explored strategies for increasing student participation, including initiatives to improve civic education and engagement, while addressing concerns about ensuring diverse voices are included in school decision-making. The panelists shared experiences and best practices for building coalitions, tracking legislation, and maintaining consistent engagement to advance youth voting and representation in school boards.
