My Service

By: Ma Ly Xiong, AmeriCorps Promise Fellow serving at Patrick Henry High School

"After months of serving as a Promise Fellow I absolutely enjoy it a lot. I never thought I would be such having amazing connections and relationships with my students. Serving here at Henry has opened my eyes to so many things and challenges that make me proud to do what I do here. I love that I am able to be a support system for my students, a safe space for them and more importantly someone that they can trust to talk about the struggles and challenges that they face. It is such an amazing feeling when my student come to me telling me their accomplishments and how they’re improving on their grades or attendance, that’s how I know I am doing something right.

The role of a Promise Fellow gives me so much flexibility, it has given me the chance to advocate for my students from a different perspective from their counselor, social worker, and teachers. I feel like it gives me the opportunity to know them on every level because I regularly do classroom support, I know what they are actually struggling on in class and what additional supports they really need. Serving as a Promise Fellow has made me feel confident why I went to college to get my social work degree because I want to help youth, I want to advocate for them and make changes. I am excited to see what the next months will be."
