Seeing Their Capacity

By Mary, AmeriCorps Promise Fellow serving at Highland Park High School in St. Paul

When I first started working with Elijah he was very disengaged in his Geometry and English classes. The phone was a huge distraction, and he was very disinterested in doing work in class. After being present in these two classes for about 2-3 weeks we started making progress toward finishing in-class work at higher rates.

Today, it comes much easier for Elijah, and he is more motivated to get work done because I have assured him that this is something he is more than capable of doing. It is really great to see students realize what they are capable of – even if school work is still not their favorite thing to do.
