In a distance learning model, many of the students will wait for me to email or message them to set up a meeting. For the first time, I had a student send me a message saying that they had good news and they wanted to meet to share it with me! It took me by surprise, since this student and I had only had a few meetings prior.
The student shared not one, but TWO pieces of good news about their engagement with a school committee and an after-school activity. In this one meeting, I learned so much about the things this student genuinely cares about. And, best of all, they took the initiative of calling me in to strengthen our new connection!
